Music and Art: A Love Story

Music is vitally important to my creative process, as I am sure it is for many others. It sets the mood, puts me in the right frame of mind. It’s the most important part of my routine, because as we all know it’s nearly impossible to be creative without “feeling it.” Sure I could go into my studio and try to put something on canvas but those are the days that I usually end up walking out feeling less than accomplished. So I always take the time to scroll through my spotify account and find what speaks to me that day. The songs themselves may have no impact on the actual painting themselves, but they send rush of adrenaline through me that makes me want to get to work. The list below are some of my favorites.

1.Josh Groban- Alla Luce Del Sole

Ahhh my all time favorite. This man and his music have been with me from the beginning. When I began seriously painting in my junior year of highschool, my art teacher turned me on to Josh Groban’s album Oceano. I listened to that album relentlessly for almost a year, blaring it from the speakers in my parents basement while sitting on the floor painting away. 13 years later not much has changed.

2.In This Moment- Blood

Angry white girl music. This woman is so bad ass, and this song in particular really gets the blood pumping. I usually put her on when I am building stretcher bars or finished frames, the sound of a table saw really goes well with the beat. Come to think of it, the whole album sounds good with a saw in the background.

3.A Goofy Movie- Stand Out & Eye to Eye

I freaking love this movie so much. Seriously, I can’t help but wiggle and jump around, hairbrush in hand singing along. It’s like I’m 9 all over again.Let’s be real, if PowerLine were a real band we would all be at that concert, doing the “perfect cast."

4.Rufus Wainwright- Hallelujah

This song hits me right in the feels every time. It’s beautiful and sad and if I close my eyes I can almost feel the brush pulling the paint across the canvas, almost as if in a dream like dance.

5.Rob Zombie- Get Your Boots On! That’s The End Of Rock & Roll

Once again, Rob Zombie’s entire The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser album just freaking does it for me. I have an entire collection inspired by this album.

There is plenty more, but these are some of my go-to’s. What inspires you to jump up and dance around? Do you fling paint around or do you control every brush stroke? let me know, i love feedback!
